WESTFIELD, NJ — Westfield wrestler Matt Barber, a senior, finished with a record of 35-5 this year. After competing in the 2014 NJSIAA Wrestling State Finals at Boardwalk Hall on March 9, he completed his high school career placing sixth in the state in his 145-pound weight class
The Alternative Press of Westfield is proud to name Barber Athlete of the Week.
According to Barber, in preparation for his season he chose to anticipate success through setting goals.
“I wrote down my goals before the season, I visualized success constantly throughout the season, and most importantly I worked harder than any of my opponents since the day my season ended last year,” he said.
“His accomplishments are the result of his setting high goals and working relentlessly to reach them,” said Westfield Head Coach Glen Kurz. “Matt knew what he wanted to accomplish, and didn’t let anything slow him down on his way to getting there.”
According to Kurz, not only did Barber devote time, but he and his drill partner, Nick Velez, practiced efficiently throughout the season, allowing them to progress at an incredible pace.
“It's been a pleasure to watch Matt progress each year. He went from a freshman who couldn't crack the varsity lineup to a sophomore who placed third in the district to a junior who was fourth in the region to, ultimately, a state-place winner. That kind of growth is rare,” Kurz said. “He was an outstanding leader and we will miss having him as part of the program.”
