WESTFIELD, NJ — Ever since he was a child playing tee-ball with his father, Matt Storcks has experienced the sense of euphoria that comes with hitting a home run. On April 1, the Westfield High School senior reached the pinnacle of this feeling as he hit a grand slam to lead the Blue Devils to a 9-6 victory over rival Scotch Plains at their opening game of the season.
“It felt really good. I didn't expect to hit a grand slam — I was just trying to help out the team and get a run or two in,” said Storcks, who drove in three more runs in the course of the game.
The Alternative Press of Westfield is proud to name Matt Storcks Athlete of the Week.
Storcks hopes his start to the season will set the pace for the rest of the Blue Devils’ season.
“As a team, our goal is to win counties as well as a state championship,” he said.
This team mentality has allowed Storcks to begin the season in such a positive way, according to Westfield Coach Bob Brewster. Not only has he adjusted as he has grown as a player, but Storcks now strives for efficiency and consistency when at the plate.
“He is waiting on the pitch now, he's being more consistent. It’s a great start for him,” said Brewster.
