WESTFIELD, NJ — Multiple Westfield High School athletes were recognized at the Board of Education Meeting held at Wilson School on May 6.
"This evening we have the pleasure of acknowledging Westfield High School’s winter sports champions,” said board member Rosanne Kurstedt.
The entire Boys’ Swim team was recognized with certificates for finishing the season with a 15-1 season and winning the Union County, Sectional and NJSIAA Public A State Championship. They ranked no. 2 in the state.
The Girls’ Swim team, which broke school records and medaled at the New Jersey Meet of Champions, was also recognized and given certificates. Relay Team Caroline Baldwin, Gwyn Devin, Erika Daniel and Sarah Cronin took first place with a winning time of 1:45.59.
Runner Gabby Stravach was recognized for placing first in the 1600 and 3200 meter races at the North II Group IV State Sectional Championships and for setting a school record in the 1600.
“She is a three-season athlete and has broken records on the cross country team as well,” said Kurstedt. “Congratulations Gabby!”
Wrestler Nick Velez, another individual athlete recognized at the meeting, is the NJSIAA Region 3 Wrestling Champion and finished the season with a 33-5 record.
