WESTFIELD, NJ — Two athletics-related presentations were given at the Westfield Board of Education Meeting and Workshop held on April 22.
Frank Fusaro of the Westfield Booster Association gave a presentation on the organization's desire to money donate to renovate the locker rooms at the Kehler Stadium, which according to Fusaro hasn’t been renovated since the 60s.
“The locker room is in need of some repair,” said Fusaro.
The board approved the resolution to accept the donation to go toward the project, which will cost $95,000, and the board agreed to fund $30,000 of it. The decision is subject to review and approval of the BOE's legal counsel.
Another presentation was given during the workshop portion by Tom Miller, a parent of two students on the Westfield High School wrestling team, about building a wrestling room. Miller claimed that the multi-purpose in-season usage of the wrestling mats by non-wrestlers with street shoes, dirty socks and bare feet led to bacteria on the mats, which caused wrestlers to get skin diseases. Miller stated that 14 varsity wrestlers had to sit out during the 2013-14 season.
The proposed room would be a 120-foot by 40-foot single story building on the south side of the Edison School’s property, east of the softball field. The project would cost an estimated $750,000 to be raised by parents and Westfield wrestling community.
Members of the board wanted more information about the operating cost, which would not be covered by donations.
“This is new to the majority of us tonight,” said Board President Richard Mattessich.
Although the board did not formally approve the fundraising, board member Ann Carey suggested that the parents could start fundraising themselves until the board could come to a decision by the end of the school year.
