WESTFIELD, NJ — During a council conference meeting Nov. 26, Westfield High School senior Alexander Kalos presented a proposal for his Eagle Scout project to the Westfield Town Council. A member of the WHS hockey team and Westfield Boy Scout Troop 72, Kalos proposed new landscaping and the construction and installation of a new sign for the front of The Department of Public Works, located at 959 North Avenue. Kalos said that the building’s current sign is too small and not visible from the street.

“The intersection [near the building] is extremely busy, and it backs up traffic when people drive five miles-per-hour to locate the sign,” Kalos said.

Kalos hopes to fundraise via local donations to have the sign created professionally in accordance with his designs. Kalos said he will then direct a team of local troop members and students to install the sign and beautify the property with plants, flowers and mulch.

“It’s fitting that the building that is responsible for beautifying Westfield is also beautiful,” Kalos said.
