BERKELEY HEIGHTS, NJ - Westfield's Chris Wright scored a game high 15 points leading Westfield Boys Basketball to a 45-36 victory over GL on Saturday afternoon in a make-up game from Tuesday's snow cancelation.
The game belonged to either team in the first-half with Westfield maintaining a slight lead throughout. Both teams kept pressure causing turnovers and low scoring opportunities.
It was GL's John Iorio that lit the boards for GL scoring 5 points in the first-half keeping GL within Westfield's reach. GL moved the ball but Westfield's tight defense denied them of shots. Wright sank two foul shots for Westfield to lead GL at half-time, 18-14.
Rob Imbalzano opened the third by sinking a shot from the top of the key bringing GL within two. Both teams traded baskets early in the third. It was Westfield's critical rebounds, defensive pressure and steals that found them in a 10 point lead with 2:46 left in the third.
GL maintained their own defensive fight; Wills with a steal and Imbalzano with an impressive block keeping Westfield from increasing their lead.
The offensive momentum shifted when senior Patrick Mahoney sank a 3-pointer with 1:30 left in the third followed by Imbalzano's 3-pointer from a rebound by John Wills. The run continued with a rebound score by Javon Reis-Wilson. GL found them self within three points of the lead at the end of the third, 34-31.
GL kept the run going, opening the fourth with Imbalzano's second 3-pointer to tie the game.
We needed to come out in the fourth quarter and find the defense that worked earlier in the game said Westfield senior Chris Wright, the 6' 9" transfer from St. Peter's Prep, who is now playing after sitting out his requirement of 30 days.
Despite the Highlander's game changing second-half run, the Blue Devils were able to hold the Highlanders to 5 points in the fourth quarter. Dylan Elliott and David Kane capitalized on foul opportunities in the fourth, sinking a combined 5 out of 7 shots from the line in the 45-36 Westfield victory.
Gov. Livingston and Westfield will rematch Tuesday, Jan. 28 in Westfield at 4 p.m.
