WESTFIELD, NJ—Having just celebrated its 100-year anniversary in 2012, the Westfield Community Band is now gearing up for its 2013 performances, including a series of outdoor concerts in Mindowaskin Park.
The non-professional band, which is comprised of musicians ages 16 to age 86, including many active and retired music educators, is sponsored in part by the Westfield Recreation Department. Under the music direction of Dr. Thomas Connors, director of Instrumental Music Studies and an assistant professor of music education at Kean University, they perform a wide variety of concert band literature.
This year’s first concert will be an indoor performance April 28 in Westfield, followed by an outdoor Memorial Eve Concert on May 26 at the Fanwood Train Station Park. They will also appear in the Westfield and Scotch Plains Memorial Day parades.
On June 27 and July 4, 11 and 18, the band will perform its Summer Concert Series in Mindowaskin. The band plans to conclude 2013 in December with its 23 Annual Holiday Concert at Westfield's Edison Intermediate School.
The band rehearses each Wednesday evening from 7:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. in the community room in the Westfield Municipal Building, 425 East Broad Street. Experienced area musicians interested in joining should contact band call President Barry Rosenberg at 908-337-9073 or email firstname.lastname@example.org.
