WESTFIELD, NJ — School’s out, and free concert season has begun in Westfield, starting with the Westfield Community Concert Band’s kickoff performance of the summer on June 26.
Now in its 102nd concert season, the band’s Summer Concert Series in Mindowaskin Park will take place on Thursday evenings, June 26, July 3, July 10 and July 17. All concerts begin at 7:30 p.m. and are free to the public.
The band has been performing its annual summer concerts since Mindowaskin Park opened in 1918.
This year, “We thought it would be especially enjoyable for both our band members and audience to present a wide variety of music within a specific genre, such as marches or opera,” Dr. Thomas Connors, now in his 10th season as music director.
On June 26, enjoy “Marches Around the World” featuring popular march selections from more than a dozen different countries, including the US. “Happy Birthday America” will be the theme July 3, “A Night at the Opera” on July 10 and “An Evening at the Pops” on July 17.
Concertgoers are encouraged to bring blankets and chairs. In the event of rain, concerts are held in the Community Room in the Westfield Municipal Building. The band’s Summer Concert Series is sponsored in part by the Westfield Recreation Department.
