WESTFIELD, NJ — The town has extended the deadline to enter into its second annual gingerbread house-building contest to this Friday, officials announced.
The contest rules state that the house, Westfield building, village or other structure should not be larger than 2-feet by 2-feet. The town asked that contestants drop off projects at Savory Spice Shop, 138 East Broad St., during business hours.
“Judging will be done via online voting booth by the community, and winners will be announced on New Year’s Day,” the town said in a statement.
Councilwoman Dawn Mackey, the principal organizer of the contest, said the town extended the deadline because Thanksgiving fell later in the year than usual.
“Everyone should feel welcome to participate,” Mackey told TAPinto Westfield. “Even though some were over the top last year, it was the variety and enthusiasm that made the gingerbread initiative fun.”
Winning categories will be announced in the categories of Grand Prize, Kids Only Effort (14-year-old and younger), Family Effort and Iconic Westfield Building, officials said.
Last year, the contest’s inaugural year, gingerbread creations were displayed in 17 storefronts throughout the downtown. Entries then included replicas of local landmarks including the Rialto Theater, the United Methodist Church and even the “Watcher House.”
