WESTFIELD, NJ — Update: On Thursday, Westfield High School Boys Tennis won the UCIAC Tournament Thursday for 10th straight year.
The Westfield High School boys' tennis team headed into semifinals in the Union County Tournament Thursday morning hoping to achieve the title of Union County champions.
“In the immediate future both 2014 conference and county championships are reasonable goals. Sectional and group championships are also goals, but some of this year's best New Jersey boys tennis teams are in our section,” said boys tennis coach George Kapner.
According to Kapner, the players have been practicing all year long in order to prepare for the spring season. The culture of the team has come to demand a yearlong commitment to achieve success.
Kapner noted that six of the team’s starters this year are underclassmen.
“We have four returning starters and a relatively young lineup with a lot of promise,” said junior Will Chen. “[The team] needs more experience with the younger guys and more confidence.”
“Each position has its own specific needs,” said Kapner. “What we work on in practice depends on many factors including the strengths and weaknesses demonstrated by each athlete in previous matches.”
“The long term goal of this team … is to improve to the point where WHS is in line to compete for the Group 4 championship in the coming seasons,” said Kapner.
