Westfield High School Theatre Department to Perform Metamorphoses

WESTFIELD, NJ — The Westfield High School Theatre Department will present its fall play, Metamorphoses, at Westfield High School on Thursday, Nov. 14 at 4 p.m, Friday, Nov. 15, at 7:30 p.m, and Saturday, Nov. 16, at 7:30 p.m.

The play is a collection of myths and tales based on Ovid's epic poem Metamorphoses. The entire show takes place in and surrounding a 1,500 gallon pool of water built into the set. Though many actors and actresses agreed that it was a challenge to work with the pool, they said they have enjoyed the experience as a whole. 

“My favorite part of the show was trying new things,” said cast member Isabella Gelfand. “We got to be really creative because the plot line and the subject matter was so unlike anything we've ever done, in addition to having water and a pool onstage. And we got to play some really cool characters, not necessarily human characters, which was awesome.”

The pool also proved to be challenging for the stage crew, particularly the costumes crew.

“The best part about the costumes is that they vary from ancient Greek to modern,” said Maddie Kevelson, head of costumes. “It was tough to do costumes for this show because the costumes do get wet. But it's also neat because lots of the transformations of the characters that happen throughout the show happen through the costumes, as well.”

Each actor plays multiple roles throughout the show.

“I play three different roles in the production of Metamorphoses,” said senior Kim Roth. “I play Alcyone, who is daughter of Aeolus, I play Pomona the wood nymph, and I also play Narrator One in scene 10.”

 “What was unique about playing Alcyone was that I really enjoyed turning into a bird,” said Roth. “I’ve never done that on stage or done anything like it before. So I enjoyed exploring the physicality of my character. And for Pomona, I have to skip around the perimeter of the stage for my entire scene, so it was very interesting to play with the timing of it. And also as a narrator, I never really thought about being on the outside of a story looking in.”

The cast includes:  Elena Arida, Colin Barry, Sarah Boyle, Catherine Bruno, Daniel Coelho, Jackie Daaleman, Lauren Echausse, Nicholas Gabuzda, Isabella Gelfand, Frank Guerriero, Victoria Guerriero, Maddie Hudelson, Katherine Ko, Julian Mone, Emmanuelle Nadeau, Abbie Paone, Megan Pinna, Michael Poyntz, Jill Rosenfeld, Madi Rosenthal, Kim Roth, Lisa Simon, Fraser Weist, Connor Wynne and Jesse Zimmermann. 

Tickets for Metamorphoses which are general admission, are $10 each and can be purchased in advance by emailing WHStickets@Westfieldnjk12.org. Any tickets not sold in advance will be available for sale at the door on the night of the shows.

On Nov. 13, veterans are invited to view a dress rehearsal for free at 4:30 p.m. Westfield High School is located at 550 Dorian Road.
