Westfield Memorial Pool Opens for 2014

June 7, 2014 at 11:24 PM

WESTFIELD, NJ – It’s officially summer in Westfield.

Westfield Memorial Pool opened Saturday under bright blue skies, and town residents flocked to the water to bask in the warm weekend weather.

Trudy Cederqvist came to the pool Saturday with her husband and three sons, ages six, four and two. Her oldest son was thrilled to complete his first run down the big outdoor slide.

“He feels like he finally made the big time,” said Cederqvist, who was camped near the kiddie pool.

The family was excited to return to the pool and anticipated spending many summer days ahead here.

“My kids are big swimmers, so this is how we fill the time when we’re not away,” Cederqvist said.

Last week, the pool management held training for its lifeguards and prepared for opening weekend, said Elaine Anderson, one of five managers at Memorial Pool.

“The thing that I love is walking around the pool seeing patrons happy,” said Anderson, who grew up taking lessons at Memorial and worked as a lifeguard here as a teen.

Group swimming lessons and swim team practices are held on weekday mornings, and private instruction can be requested, Anderson noted. The pool typically offers family nights with a DJ and games on certain dates in July and August.

Memorial Pool will be open June 9 to13 from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m., and again June 16 to 20 from 4 p.m. to 8 pm, according to an email notice from the town’s recreation department. Weekend hours of operation are 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Beginning June 23, the pool will be open weekdays from 12 p.m. to 8 p.m., with the exception of the kiddie pool, which opens for younger children at 10 a.m.
