Westfield Pit Bulls to be Euthanized After Deadly Attack

July 16, 2014 at 3:33 PM

WESTFIELD, NJ — Carlos Diaz and his fiancé, Patricia Kazanowski, cried as they agreed in Westfield Municipal Court Wednesday to have their two dogs, a pit bull and pit bull mix, euthanized after the dogs attacked Westfield resident Michael Eagan and the Eagan family’s dog, a 14-year-old Jack Russell Terrier named Molly, on June 12. Molly later died.

The incident took place just before 5 a.m. at the Eagan’s Westfield home, about six blocks from where the pit bulls had escaped on Pine Grove Avenue, according to Eagan. He had let Molly into their yard, which has an invisible fence. Eagan said he noticed two shadows coming toward him from across the street, which turned out to be the pit bulls. They spotted Molly and attacked her, pulling her to the ground by her neck and biting her legs.

Eagan said he managed to fight off the attacking dogs and grab Molly, but one of them grabbed Molly by the legs, ripping her from his arms. His 13-year-old son witnessed part of the attack.

Eventually, Eagan was able to bring Molly inside, where the family was trapped until Westfield police officers were able to lure the pit bulls away, he said.

“The muscle on her back leg was torn apart,” said Eagan. “They ripped all of the fur off of her back leg.”

Eagan was treated for two bites on his left hand and received rabies shots. Molly’s wounds were so extensive that she was put to sleep, he told TAP into Westfield.

“She was a good dog,” said his wife, Cheryl Eagan, who carried photos of Molly with her to court.

Before there could be a hearing, Diaz and Kazanowski agreed to allow their dogs to be euthanized. As a result, charges against Diaz were dropped.

Diaz and Kazanowski told TAP into Westfield that they never thought this could happen.

“We just want to apologize for what happened,” Diaz said.

“I feel terrible,” said Michael Eagan. “I’m a dog lover. I feel bad for them. But the safety of the community is more important.”
