WESTFIELD, NJ — Westfield police have issued an alert via Nixle warning residents not to approach, feed or photograph the bear present in Westfield. (Read our earlier story: Black Bears Seen Roaming Westfield and Mountainside.)

“Be alert and use caution when outdoors,” Police Chief David Wayman advised in the alert. “Keep a close [eye] on your children and pets.”

If you see a bear, contact the Westfield Police Department and leave the area immediately, the alert said. Residents are also advised to properly secure and cover their garbage so as not to attract bears.
