WESTFIELD, NJ — Summer roof repairs at Westfield public schools are set to begin Tuesday, according to the district. The work is a continuation of repairs and replacements begun last summer.
Buildings scheduled for roof work include Franklin, Jefferson, McKinley, Tamaques and Wilson Elementary Schools; Edison Intermediate School; Lincoln School; Kehler Stadium and the Board Administration Building.
While safety measures will be in place at the construction sites, the school district is encouraging parents to use caution when bringing children to and from the school playgrounds and to make sure their children do not enter construction sites or playground areas that are closed. Questions regarding the summer playground program should be referred to the Westfield Recreation Department (908-789-4080).
Roof work is not expected to result in interruptions to the start of school on Sept. 3, according to Business Administrator Dana Sullivan.
Though voters passed a bond referendum last November authorizing the district to sell $13.6 million in bonds for its roofing projects, the board of education was informed last week that the district will now only need to sell $10.1 million. As required by state law, the district had to take bids from contractors for the roofing projects and then choose the lowest offer, which resulted in $3.5 million in savings.
