Westfield Students Excel in Moody’s Math Challenge

Five Westfield High School seniors received Honorable Mention in Moody’s Mega Math Challenge, a mathematics modeling competition for high school students.  The Westfield team was one of 53 whose papers were considered for prizes out of 1,100 submitted.

Winning a $1,000 scholarship to split between them are, (l-r): Matt Luppino, Lucia Liu, Cindy Xiao, Mark Gillespie, and Alex Beals.  Congratulating the students is WHS Math teacher/adviser Les Jacobsen.  The seniors submitted a 20-page paper with documentation to support this year’s Moody’s Mega Math Challenge which dealt with nutrition and cost of school lunches.  Each team was to simulate a consulting firm and provide a report with mathematically founded insights into the problem as outlined.  This is the third time Westfield has advanced to the honorable mention level.

In describing the Sunday during which the team worked on their model from 7 am – 9 pm, Cindy said, “It was intense all-day Math, and it was fun working with other people.  We applied math principles you learn in class.  I recommend everyone do it just for the fun of it.”
