WESTFIELD, NJ — Westfield's town council voted unanimously in favor of an ordinance that would allow microbreweries and craft distilleries in Westfield’s central business district during Tuesday night’s town council meeting.
The ordinance, no. 2111, requires that the microbrewery or distillery include a sampling room and retail sales area.
These types of businesses are already allowed in town outside of the central business district. This move would provide another possible opportunity to fill a vacant space downtown, Town Administrator Jim Gildea explained.
As several town council members expressed their enthusiasm for the idea, Mayor Shelley Brindle noted, “Microbrewery downtown sounds ... popular.”
The ordinance will go to the Westfield Planning Board next for review, then a public hearing and final vote must take place before the change could go into effect.
Council members JoAnn Neylan and Linda Habgood were absent from the meeting.
