TOMS RIVER, NJ — The Westfield boys winter track team placed fifth in the state in the NJSIAA Group 4 meet held on Friday.
Westfield, which had a team score of 14 points, won the 4x400 meter relay. The team of Ajay Olson, Steven Zucker, Matt McIntyre and Jake Saltzer ran a time of 3:26.11, bettering their second-place finish in the sectional final the week before, when they ran the same event in 3:26.99.
Saltzer was also fourth in the 400-meter dash with a time of :50.48, while Olson ran 10th in the same event with a time of :52.09.
The Westfield girls team was highlighted by Katie Hamilton's fourth-place finish in the 800-meter run, with a time of 2:19.04 in the Group 4 state meet. Isabel Boufarah of Westfield was eighth in the same race in 2:21.22. Lauren Triarsi came in seventh in the 55m hurdles at 8.69. Erica Lawrence placed seventh in the shot put with a throw of 38-00.25.
The week before, the Westfield boys' team finished seventh in the Section 2, Group 4 meet. Saltzer was fourth in the 400-meter dash (51.70), McIntyre was fifth in the 55m dash (6.77), Olson was fifth in the 400-meter dash (51.96) and Cooper Brennan ran fifth in the 800-meter run (2:01.79).
“Ajay won his heat of the 400 to place 5th overall, and led off with an outstanding leg on the relay,” Westfield boys track coach Chris Tafelski said of the performances in the sectional final. “It’s also worth noting that Matt McIntyre, in his first season of track, placed 5th in the 55 dash and ran the third leg on the relay, cutting 2 seconds off his previous best.”
The Westfield girls team team placed second, 79-52, behind Ridge at the sectional championship.
“Erica Lawrence broke her school record in the shot put at the county championships and was county champion,” said Westfield girls track coach Jen Buccino. “On Sunday, she defended her North 2, Group 4 state sectional title. And then she broke her record again with a throw of 38-8 at the Rebel Shot Series at Howell HS.”
Triarsi was also sectional champion in the 55 hurdles with a time of 8.82.
