WEST ORANGE, NJ - As we head into the home stretch of the Labor Day Weekend, college students prepare to return to classes this week and things start getting back to normal in West Orange. Here's roundup of what's going on this week and what you need to know.
Monday, September 2
Labor Day is a Federal Holiday, so federal and state offices are closed: township offices, libraries, post offices, financial markets, and banks and credit unions. Trains will operated on a weekend/holiday schedule.
Tuesday, September 3
From the town website, ongoing road closures in the Gregory section due to water main work:
Yale Terrace, entire length; Orange Heights Avenue from Yale Terrace to Gregory Avenue; Walker Road from Yale Terrace to Gregory Avenue.
Walker Road will not be closed until 8:30 am, and Walker Road and Orange Heights Avenue will not be closed at the same time. Also Hazel Avenue from Rollinson Street to Oak Ridge Road. This will not be closed until 8:30 am.
Free Family Movie Night at Oscar Schindler Performing Arts Center, in conjunction with New Jersey Arts Incubator... 101 Dalmations starring Glenn Close and Jeff Daniels. Doors open at 7:00 pm; movie starts at 8:00 pm. Bring blankets and lawn chairs.
Wednesday, September 4
The Annual Senior Picnic will be held at Ginny Duenkel Pool from 11:30 am to 2:30 pm. The cost for West Orange Residents is $7 and $9 for non- Residents (who must belong to WO Senior Club). Rain Dates: September 5 or 6.
Rosh Hashana, the Jewish New Year, begins at sundown and ends Friday at sundown.
Teen Open Mic Night at the West Orange Public LIbrary, 7:00 - 8:00 pm. Share your music and poetry. Advance registration preferred.
Friday, September 6
West Orange Farmers Market, Quigley Parking Lot, 12:00 pm - 6:00 pm. If you haven't gone to the Farmer's Market, you'll never know what you're missing.
Come to the West Orange Public Library Meeting Room for a Movie and Dessert from 2:00 - 5:15. What's showing? Red, starring Bruce Willis and Helen Mirren.
Turtle Back Zoo presents Night Moves! from 7:30 pm – 10:00 pm. Bring a flashlight and see what goes on at the Zoo at night during this special guided tour.
Saturday, September 7
The Valley Arts "Valley We Design/Walk Around and Picnic Workshop" will be held from 9:00 am - 1:00 pm, beginning at the Ironworks Community Artist Center, 406 Tompkins Street in Orange. West Orange residents are invited to participate in the process of the redesign of the Valley area.
Sunday, September 8
The South Orange International Blues Festival will be held from 11:00 am - 8:00 in the South Mountain Reservation on Cherry Lane. West Orange resident Dave Stryer and Blue to the Bone will perform from 3-4 pm.
Tycoon Dog, a popular local band, will perform at the the Turtle Back Zoo amphitheater from 12:00 - 3:00 pm. Included with admission.
