What's Going On In West Orange This Weekend?

WEST ORANGE, NJ - It may be cold but there's plenty going on around town to keep you and the kids entertained.

Saturday, January 19:

At 2:00 pm, there will be a free Disney movie matinee for the whole family at the West Orange Public Library.

At 4:00 pm, the 8th annual MAIN Scholastic (Mid-Atlantic Indoor Network) Competition will be hosted at West Orange High School.  25 Winter Color Guards from the Tri-State Area will come together to compete and perform their 2013 shows. The show begins at 4pm in the West Orange High School Tarnoff Gym; adult tickets are $9 and seniors/students $5. There will also be refreshments sold at the competition.

From 8:00 pm - Midnight, the Restore The Shore Fundraiser will be held at the Shillelagh Club. Tickets are $20.00 which can be purchased at the door and the event will be hosted by Weird NJ publishers Mark Sceurman and Mark Moran. Local bands such as The Poor Man’s OperaThe Will O’Connor Live Acoustic Show, and special musical guests will be performing. Wine and tap beer are free from 7-9 pm.

Sunday, January 20

The West Orange Classic Film Festival continues at 2:00 pm with Batman, the 1989 film by Tim Burton.  Tickets are $10.00 and may be purchased in advance at www.fandango.com.

There's still space in the West Orange Rec Lacrosse camp, scheduled for January 20 and 27th at the WOHS Gym.Shelley Sheiner, Head Men's Lacrosse Coach at Kean University and the Kean University Lacrosse Coaches will lead  the Winter Indoor Lacrosse Clinic.  This clinic, co-sponsored by the West Orange Recreation Department, will be held on January 20th and January 27th.

There are three age groups, with each group limited to 40 registrants.  The K through 4 sessions will be held from 1:00 pm to 2:15 pm and will be a soft lacrosse format with all equipment provided.  The 2:30 pm to 3:45 pm will be for registrants in grades 5 through 8 and will be soft lacrosse with all materials supplied.  The final session of the day will be from 4:00 pm to 5:30 pm and is open to grades 9 through 12.  This session will be full lacrosse and participants are required to bring their own gear.

The registration fee is $50.00 and made payable to the "Friends of Cougar Lacrosse." 

Monday, January 21

The West Orange Human Relations Commission will hold their annual Martin Luther King event at 9:30 am at St. Joseph's Church Gym, located at 44 Benvenue Avenue.  This year's theme will be "Moving Forward With the Dream," a free program that will celebrate the life of Dr. King and feature this year's guest speaker, the Hon. Sharon Robinson-Briggs, Mayor of Plainfield, NJ.   In addition to Ms. Robinson-Briggs, several West Orange residents who work in the spirit of peace and justice in the West Orange community, will also be honored.   The honorees are West Orange residents whose professional and volunteer accomplishments honor the work and life of Dr. Martin Luther, Jr., in enabling all Americans to reach their potential.
