WESTFIELD, NJ — Public schools in Westfield began operating remotely in mid-March and, since then, 99.4% percent of students in the class of 2020 have graduated.

A total of 482 students graduated from Westfield High School this year, with 479 students receiving their diplomas in June and three others doing so after completing summer school, Superintendent Margaret Dolan announced. Meanwhile, two students are continuing in a transition program and one returned to Westfield High School this month, according to Dolan.

Since leaving the district, Westfield’s graduates have gone on to pursue the following endeavors, according to the school district:

Westfield’s graduates are represented at 162 colleges and universities across 35 states, as well as four countries outside the U.S. The most popular universities among Westfield’s 2020 graduates include Rutgers University, New York University and Virginia Polytechnic Institute, according to information Dolan presented at this week's school board meeting.

“I give kudos to all of those seniors,” Dolan said. “They did not have the senior year that they expected, but they persevered, and they met all of their graduation requirements”

She noted that, due to the ongoing pandemic, some students may have changed their plans since having completed the survey. The survey opened in May, and students were allowed to complete it on a rolling basis throughout the summer, Dolan said.

“I’m sure there might be some people who reported in June or July and maybe their plans have changed as the universities changed their plans as well,” she said. “It’s certainly possible that that is the case.”
