MAPLEWOOD, NJ - All throughout July, Candlewick Press will be sponsoring a “Where’s Waldo” themed scavenger hunt in twenty-six stores throughout Maplewood. Words Bookstore is the local headquarters of the Where’s Waldo project, which involves hiding a cardboard figurine of the main character from the popular series in each of the stores.
The purpose of the hunt is to promote local shopping. In addition to Words, Candlewick Press is also sponsoring the scavenger hunt in independent bookstores all across the country. This is the third year that Candlewick Press has sponsored the hunt.
When Waldos from ten stores have been found, the seeker receives a special button from Words and a coupon for one dollar off a Where’s Waldo book. When Waldos from twenty stores have been found, the seeker will be entered into a grand prize drawing, the winner of which will be revealed on July 24 at a celebration at Words. Although the scavenger hunt is intended for younger children, all ages are welcome to participate.
In order to begin the scavenger hunt, participants must first report to Words Bookstore, where they will receive a “passport”. The passport contains a list of the twenty-six stores in which Waldo’s can be found, with a space for the respective owners at each store to sign off when each Waldo is found. From there, participants are free to seek out the Waldo’s in any order they choose and return to Words with the signatures when they are finished collecting them.
In addition to promoting local shopping, the Where’s Waldo Scavenger Hunt also instills a sense of community among the youngsters of the South Orange-Maplewood area. By providing a fun way to explore and appreciate their town, the project is truly an example of how to give back to the neighborhood and make it a more interesting place to live and grow.
