Ardmore, Lower Merion Township, PA — Why you ask? The Lower Merion Police Department invites the citizens of the Township to meet with police officers over Coffee. Coffee with a Cop is a community policing initiative that is designed to set up a framework for building trust between the community and the police. Tomorrow in Suburban Square come and meet with an officer at the courtyard from 10:00 AM through 12:00 PM.
“I like the program, it allows me to meet new people at a time when they do not need our services,” stated a Lower Merion Officer that was covering the Ardmore beat. "So if and when we do need to interact that original meeting may have made it easier to do so,"
There is no agenda for having Coffee with a cop other than residents have the opportunity to ask questions of the police, voice their concerns, and to get to know the officers in your neighborhood.
The program was developed in 2011 in Hawthorne California when Officers from the Hawthorne Police Department were looking for ways to successfully interact with the citizens that they served. Looking for a simple yet effective way to communicate and breakdown barriers, officers elected meeting citizens over a cup of Coffee.
In Lower Merion, the program has been ongoing for the last few years. The key to the program is that the citizens and police can interact outside of a crisis situation where members of the community and the police are thrown together by some crime related incident. The location of the meet and greet changes regularly allowing participation throughout various parts of the Township.
Before this weekends meeting the last time that the event was held was in April when it was held in Bala Cynwyd. The Coffee with a Cop program in Lower Merion has been held in parks, libraries and other locations in the Township that have high visibility and public usage.
