UPDATE 11/20/19 at 6:29 PM: Rabies has been confirmed by Glen Ridge Police. 

GLEN RIDGE, NJ — A red fox was killed after attacking several people, including a police officer, Glen Ridge law enforcement announced Tuesday.

According to published reports, Glen Ridge police received five complaints of a fox attack on November 15. During these encounters, three people were bitten and taken to nearby hospitals.

After receiving several calls, officers were able to locate the suspected fox around 11:35am, in the area near Toney's Brook. He tried to bite them as they grew closer and was euthanized, according to reports.

The remains were taken into custody by the Bloomfield Animal Control officers, who sent the fox for rabies testing by the New Jersey Division of Fish and Wildlife (DFW).

Glen Ridge Police remind residents to be cautious around wildlife and to contact law enforcement if concerned about an animal.
