Winter Storm Janus Shuts Schools and Businesses

SOUTH PLAINFIELD, NJ – Schools, businesses and government offices all closed early Tuesday and many are shut today as residents dig out from nearly a foot of snow dropped on South Plainfield by Winter Storm Janus.  South Plainfield Public Schools are closed for today.  Rutgers University has a delay until 12:00pm today, and many offices and businesses have delayed openings.

The Borough had snowplows out all Tuesday into Wednesday morning, but snow crews struggled to keep pace with the intensity of the storm.  As the storm raced up the east coast weather forecasters changed predictions from a moderate snow total to snow estimates of over 12 inches.

The snow is not expected to disappear anytime soon. The National Weather Service is forecasting extremely cold temperatures to persist for the next week.

Mayor Matthew P. Anesh said “this storm packed a punch, but I’d like to thank our Department of Public Works and Emergency Services for staying ahead of the storm.”
