SPARTA, NJ- On July 6 at 7:06 a.m. Officer Daniel Elig was stationary on Route 15 observing northbound traffic when he saw 2000 Jeep Cherokee pass his location. What drew his attention to this vehicle was that he recognized the operator as 37 year-old Sparta resident, Gennifer Martin. Elig was aware that Martin’s driver’s license was currently under suspension.
After stopping the vehicle the officer spoke to both Martin and her passenger, 33 year-old Jennifer Vanhouten of Newton. Both women offered conflicting stories of where they were coming from.
Elig requested and was granted a voluntary Consent to Search the vehicle. Three illegal hypodermic syringes were found in the glove compartment of the vehicle. Vanhouten took ownership of the needles. Both women were arrested and transported to police headquarters for processing.
Vanhouten was charged with Possession of Drug Paraphernalia and Unlawful Possession of three syringes. Martin was charged with Driving While Suspended. The women were released several hours later on their own recognizance. Corporal Louis Takacs and Craig Grauerholz assisted with the investigation.
