You Rock Media Group Raises $2,000 At Hurricane Sandy Relief Concert

November 26, 2012 at 5:57 AM

VERNON TOWNSHIP, NJ - On top of a hill in the middle of Vernon farmland stands no ordinary barn.

Local musicians, friends and family gathered at The Rickey Farm barn on Friday night, where You Rock Media Group raised about $2,000 at the Hurricane Sandy Relief benefit concert. All proceeds will go directly to The Red Cross.

“It was a great experience to see how many people came out. Hopefully we’ll be able to make a difference,” said Dominic Cioffi, founder of You Rock Media Group (YRMG).

The concert was also live streaming, where people could make their donations to The Red Cross over the phone. The money counted did not include phone donations from the live stream.

The doors opened at 3:30 p.m. and once the first performer turned on the microphone at four, the room started to crowd. Geoff Doubleday was the first singer to kick off the night with “Atlantic City” by The Band.

“I’m doing this one for Jersey,” Doubleday announced.

Doubleday and Cristina Ferucci were the first solo artists to unveil their acoustic and vocal skills. Fourteen year-old, Cristina Ferucci of Jefferson Township, N.J., writes her own music, and performs at many different venues. She has been a part of YRMG for almost a year, but this was a special occasion.

“I have a soft spot for the victims because so many areas affected were in Jersey. I’m happy to be performing for this cause,” Ferucci said.

The artists who performed were Lacey Caroline, Hali D., Shout out the Crowd, Lift the Decade, Losing Streak, Something About January, Between Me and You, Lacey Caroline, and special guests who have also performed at The Vans Warped Tour, I Call Fives.

The night was carried out with acoustic, folk, classic and modern rock music combined with a happy and eager barn full of fans. By the time 8 o’clock rolled by, there was a completely packed house of about 200 people.

Hali D. and her band had a bandmate come up from Nashville for the event. Jon Gambino is from Wayne, N.J., and his family has a house in Lavallette, N.J., an area hit hard by Superstorm Sandy.

“My family was affected and it’s been hard. I hated seeing everything going on and not being able to do anything from Nashville, but I came up for this event to support a good cause,” Gambino said.

You Rock Media Group has made a new medium through social networks to discover new talent, give back, and promote local music. Fans, artists and venues are involved in the group, which supports and donates to The Red Cross, just one of their philanthropic partners.

Cioffi started YRMG after being involved with the music industry for 17 years.

“I saw how the music industry worked. The unknown artist was constantly being left out. I have a deep passion for music and decided something had to be done. We hope to keep promoting more and more unknown artists at You Rock,” Cioffi said.

I do not agree with the Governor on much, but I am happy to hear that he has decided to work on drug issues in his final year of office. In our state and in my ex-rural region of Sussex County opioid abuse continues to be a major issue, but it has become now more of a national issue. According to The New York Times, “Opioid addiction is America’s 50-state epidemic.”  ...
