My name is Vanessa Serrano, Ed. D. I am running for a one-year term for the Sparta Board of Education. I have been a resident of Sparta since 2011. I am married and have two children, Michael (7) and Ciara (5).

I am running for the Sparta Board of Education because although our school system is exceptional, we can always improve. Having children in the school system and attending board of education meetings has allowed me to see firsthand some of the issues affecting our schools. I believe the board of education must take input from ALL community stakeholders before making decisions.

Special education, more specifically, Pre-K through 5th grade special education, is an area I believe needs additional support. As a teacher and a school administrator, I have both known and accommodated special needs students and come to know and work with their parents. As an advocate for all children and families, I firmly believe we need to be active in addressing and providing resources that benefit the whole-child. The district must continue to improve the manner in which they inform parents about their options, the assessment process, and the policies surrounding special education.

Our newsletter delivers the local news that you can trust.

We are fortunate to live in a town with wonderful public schools. I believe if we can increase the communication and collaboration between families/community and the school district, we can make our great schools even better. The benefits are significant to both sides. The parents and community will gain an understanding of the decisions made by the school district and the school district will gain a better understanding of the viewpoints of their Sparta constituents.
