My name is John Finkeldie and I am running for Sparta Town Council. I have always enjoyed living in Sparta and I’m very proud to claim Sparta as my home for the last 25 years. Married 27 years to my wife Valerie, we are very proud to have been fortunate enough to raise two awesome children, Olivia and John Henry in Sparta. I studied Engineering at the New Jersey Institute of Technology, receiving a Bachelor of Science in Engineering, and I currently have my N.J. professional engineering license with over 20 years of engineering experience.
Prior and during my studies, I spent 21 years serving our great Country in the United States Marine Corps, and retired as a Gunnery Sergeant. I served in combat overseas in both the Gulf War and the War in Iraq. As a veteran, I bring leadership, organizational skills and a spirit of collaboration. As an engineer, I bring critical thinking skills to include the objective analysis and evaluation of issues in order to form fact-based judgment. I have worked for local municipalities, counties and the federal government in an engineering capacity, and understand infrastructure systems and costs including roads, water systems, waste water allocation, land use and facilities.
I belong to many non-profit organizations, including Trout Unlimited, the Sparta VFW and the NJ Corporate Wetlands Restoration Partnership. Within these organizations, I have held leadership roles to include President, Senior Vice Commander and Board Member. Currently, I believe Sparta has positive momentum with the current leadership, and I am very optimistic that I can continue to build on that positive trajectory. Our leaders are open and approachable, with a good information dissemination process and I hope to continue this practice of open dialogue. Sparta also has excellent municipal services, and I will continue to support these services, and the people that provide them to the citizens of Sparta. I am also a firm believer in avoiding unnecessary spending, and will evaluate current practices in order to plan spend well within budget.
On a personal note, I am an outdoor enthusiast with hobbies that include skiing, boating, fishing, cycling and of course, attending my children’s sporting events. I am very proud of our community, and all that it has to offer our families, and I look forward to serving you, and your family, if I am elected.
