My name is Michael Rosenberg and I am standing for re-election to the Fair Lawn Board of Education.
In my 12 years that I have served on the board, and my 16 years of teaching, education has changed so much and has evolved. I have been involved in our community since I was a kid growing up in town.
I am a life member of the rescue squad, a current CERT team member, a member of the Sunrise Rotary Club, and Scouting. My wife Ellen and I, and my two sons, all graduated Fair Lawn High. My five grandchildren all live in town, and four of them attend our schools. My in-laws Mary and Pat Kissane also still live in Fair Lawn. I am able to see the schools in multiple perspectives and at the same time step back and be objective and do what is right for all students, as well as the taxpayers and entire community.
The world has changed and our borough has changed immensely. It has gotten increasingly more diverse and unfortunately, divided. There are over 1,000 more students in our schools than there were when I first started, and full-day Kindergarten, which increased our classroom needs. Much of that increase has been over the last five years. Our schools have continued to evolve to meet the needs of ALL students. We educate the "whole child."
Over the years, we have had to add many security initiatives, as well as mental health initiatives to deal with social and emotional issues we have in our schools today. We offer many programs that small districts are not able to. We keep improving our services to both parents and students who were not born here, immigrants to our country, and our special needs students. We also excel and have revamped our programs for advanced students. Where ever a child comes into our district, we are going to bring them up.
Over my last term, we have hired a new superintendent, as well as begun a building project that the voters passed overwhelmingly, that will move our 5th graders to the middle schools. It looks to me like this move will also improve how we provide services to our 6th graders. We have begun a 1:1 initiative. We are offering more after school activities. We are meeting the needs of all of the different populations in Fair Lawn.
I hope to continue the transformation that is happening and continue to support our superintendent while doing the most important job of a board member, to set policy and to see that our schools are well run. I, along with my running mates Cindy Jo Quakenbush and Mary Wallace, have the experience and leadership to keep moving our district forward. We have all served as Board President and we understand our roles on the board. We are #7, #8, and #9 on the ballot and we will do more for ALL children of Fair Lawn.
