On May 26th, less than eight months after Dr. Rossi’s new contract was approved, offering a 13% increase in salary and occurring prior to the newly elected board members assuming their roles, Dr. Rossi took a leave of absence. In July, the board of education formally voted to part ways.
As we begin the search for Sparta’s new Superintendent, it is crucial we follow the proper process, and it looks like we are off to a good start. The first step in this process was selecting the superintendent search firm, R-Pat LLC. A rough timeline has been provided which notes that the vacancy will be advertised beginning in November and a survey will go out to stakeholders as well as public forums for stakeholders. A well-crafted survey is a useful tool in gathering feedback, however, public forums where we can receive specific input from the community, staff and other school administrators are key. These stakeholders should have a voice in this process in order to find the right fit for our town. There are so many parents who are willing and able to share their thoughts on this monumental decision.
A superintendent serves a chief education officer, and we need our next Superintendent to be a leader and a visionary. Someone who will be vested in Sparta’s growth and development. Someone who will build relationships with the students, staff and the community. We need someone who wants to make a difference in our district. Not someone just looking to do use our town as a stepping stone or one last hoorah. The negative effects of our Superintendent turnover could be felt for years which hurts our long-range vision, staff morale and infrastructure.
