There aren't any words that can adequately describe the pain i felt as a parent after hearing about an act of sheer evil which took the lives of 26 people on last Friday in Connecticut.
When I heard that the ages were from 6 to 7 years old; I cringed. My firstborn, Kaniyah is 7. It hit home for me as a parent. I just wanted to reach out, hold the parents in my arms and offer as much comfort as I could to them.
Just the thought of getting a call and being told that a shooting occurred in the place where you knew your child was safe is bad in itself. But to then find out that your child was one of the victims...that's too much for any parent to digest.
I'm praying for that entire place. Not just for Newtown, but for Connecticut as well. Anytime a death occurs, emotions are high. In this case, it involved 20 little ones - innocent angels, who's lives were taken away from them in the most violent way.
It also involved 6 courageous teachers and administrators. They laid down their lives to save as many of the children's lives they could. They exemplified what it means to be educators and advocates because they truly defended the children. May God grant peace to their family in this dark hour.
I pray for the family of the shooter. I pray for the father, who lost 2 sons and his wife all in one day. I can't even begin to fathom what must be going thru his mind at this hour. I pray God grant him peace of mind.
If any students need someone to talk to or to pray with them, I am available. I can be reached at: (973) 816-6460. Feel free to reach out to me anytime. I'm not just a school Board Member, I'm a parent and an Ordained Minister. I care about our city and our schools deeply.
Let's all remember to visit our schools as parents and let the teachers know that we support them and appreciate them for keeping our kids safe on a daily basis. Sometimes, we have a tendency to take things for granted.
Life is precious and valuable. We must take the time to love each other, to treat each other with respect and dignity. In doing so, we will be able to live our lives without any regrets.
May God bless the Newtown, CT community and the United States of America.
All the best,
Corey L. Teague
