FAIRFIELD, NJ — A 41-year-old woman was recently arrested in the parking lot of the Fairfield Target store for unlawful possession of a handgun, according to the Fairfield Police Department.

Officer Jeffrey Dean was on patrol when he observed two individuals sitting on a bench in front of the Target. According to police, the officer found it suspicious that both individuals were smoking cigarettes and that both appeared to be nodding off.

At this point, the officer decided to check on these individuals, as their behavior was consistent with being under the influence and that they may need assistance. In speaking with Sophie Oufir of Wayne and her companion, police said they both indicated that they had been fasting for Ramadan, and this was the reason they both appeared lethargic.

Oufir was immediately placed under arrest and the gun was seized. The woman later told the officers that she had purchased the weapon off the streets of Paterson.

According to police, Oufir was transported to the Essex County Correctional Facility pending court action.
