Arrests for Driving While Under the Influence of Narcotics

January 3, 2014 at 4:28 PM

SPARTA, NJ - An Edison man was arrested on New Year’s Day after he was stopped on Rte. 15 for making an illegal left turn.  At 2:33 p.m., Sgt. Jospeh Pensado was on routine patrol traveling Rte 15 north in the area of the 11-mile marker.

A 2003 Chevrolet Trailblazer that was traveling in front of the sergeant in the left lane, abruptly slammed on his brakes and made an illegal left turn onto the paved cut-through that is marked for “Emergency Vehicles Only.”  After stopping the vehicle, Pensado spoke to the operator later identified as 49-year-old Edison resident, Craig W. Ferry.

Subsequent investigation determined that Ferry’s driver’s license was under suspension.  Pensado’s suspicions were heightened that Ferry may be under the influence when he was found in possession of a glass smoking stem, commonly utilized to inhale crack cocaine.  Ferry did not deny using the stem to smoke crack.

After failing a series of Field Sobriety Tests, Ferry was arrested and transported to the Andover Township Police Department for processing.  Andover Township Police Department’s Class II Special Officer Joseph Abrusci who is a certified Drug Recognition Expert continued the investigation with additional testing.

Ferry was later charged with; Driving While Under the Influence of Narcotics, Driving While Suspended, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, Improper Crossing of a Highway Divider and Careless Driving.

Ferry was released early that evening to a sober driver.  His vehicle was impounded.  Officer Daniel Elig assisted with the investigation.

New Year’s morning DWI accidents (Two arrests)

The New Year got off to a bad start for two Sussex County men when they were involved in separate unrelated DWI accidents early New Year’s morning in Sparta Township.  At 1:00 am, Cpl. Marc Rubino attempted to stop a black 2013 Mini Cooper on Rte. 181 for speeding.  The Cooper when signaled to stop increased its speed and attempted to elude the officer.

At the intersection of Green Road and Sawmill Road, the operator of the vehicle lost control and ran off the road.  Arrested at the scene for DWI and Eluding was; Lafayette resident, 43-year-old Gabor A. Stibinger.

Stibinger who was uninjured was later charged with; DWI, Eluding a Law Enforcement Officer, Reckless Driving and Failure to Stop at a Stop Sign.  Stibinger was released to a sober adult later in the day.  His vehicle was impounded.

An hour and a half later, a  Sparta man escaped serious injury after he crashed his car while under the influence of alcohol.  At 2:27 am, Officer Scott Elig investigated a 9-1-1 report of an accident on Woodport Road near the Jefferson Township Border.

Elig’s investigation reveals that a 2005 Honda CRV being operated by 25-year-old Kyle S. Hansen of Sparta was traveling north, when it sideswiped a guide rail on the passenger’s side of the vehicle.  The Honda then crossed the double yellow lines, entered into the opposite lane of travel striking the guide rail in the southbound shoulder then bouncing off and again crossing the double yellow lines and striking the guide rail on the northbound shoulder where it came to a rest.

Hansen who had a bloody nose refused medical treatment at the scene and was arrested for DWI a short time later.  Hansen who had a blood alcohol reading of almost twice the legal limit was charged with; DWI, Careless Driving, Failure to Keep Right and a Documentation violation was released several hours later to a sober adult.  His vehicle has been impounded.
