West Caldwell Chief Michael Bramhall reported:

At approximately 11:30 a.m. on Monday, Feb. 4, a resident of Passaic Avenue, in the area of Longmeadow Lane, called the West Caldwell police via 9-1-1 and reported someone had broken into her house.
Officers responded and determined that an unknown actor broke into the rear door of the home and was making his way towards the second floor when the actor became aware that the resident was home and on the second floor. The actor then ran back outside the home in an unknown direction.  Officers searched the interior of the home and the exterior of the property for the actor with negative results.  A perimeter was set up with assistance from the Fairfield and North Caldwell Police Departments.

The Essex County Sheriff’s Department K-9 Unit responded and assisted with a search that led officers to the area of the Henderson Drive, where the K-9 lost a scent to track on.

The home owner was not injured and nothing was reported missing.  The investigation is continuing.

The actor was not observed directly by the homeowner.
