Police have received a number of complaints regarding phone fraud involving PSEG. Police Chief Strumolo urges residents to contact PSEG directly if anyone representing to be from there are seeking payment.

If you sell any item/s on the internet, DO NOT accept a check for more than the item was agreed to be sold.  DO NOT deposit checks that have instructions to send a portion of that check to another location.  The checks are fraudulent and you WILL lose money from your account.

Animal Complaint – Homer Avenue -  Response was made to the area regarding a dog found in the yard of the homeowner.  Officers returned to Headquarters with the dog, the owner was found and responded to Headquarters to retrieve their dog. 

2/18/19

Theft of Identity – Headquarters received a walk in report of theft of identity.  The victim stated that they began to receive several notifications that their recent credit card applications were denied.  None of the credit cards were applied for by the victim.  The victim stated that they signed up with Life Lock and was alerted that something was opened up with AT&T, but they were able to intercept it.  Detective Bureau was advised of the incident.

2/19/18

Incident – Kierstead Avenue – Police responded to a dispute  which resulted in the arrest of Eugene Watson, 23, of Nutley.  He was transported to Headquarters without incident, charged with Possession with Intent to Use Drug Paraphernalia, Possession of CDS Marijuana, both Disorderly Person’s Offenses, advised of his Court date and released from custody. The evidence was placed in secure hold.

Burglary – Satterthwaite Avenue – the resident contacted Police when they noticed their back door lock had been tampered with and the door was ajar when returning to the home.  Officers arrived and checked the residence to make certain no one was in the home.  It did not appear that anything was taken at the time of the report.  The homeowner will be going through the home more closely and told to contact police should they find anything missing. 

2/20/19

Fraud -  the victim of fraud responded to Headquarters to report the incident.  They stated that they hired a contractor to complete work on their home which was paid in several installments.  The check written in July of 2018 was deposited and later found to be deposited again under a different and altered amount.  The Detective Bureau was advised and is investigating. 

Fraud – Headquarters received a report regarding fraud.  The victim stated that they lost a Chase Bank liquid debit card and was notified by the financial institution that there was numerous withdrawals made from an unknown person on the account. 

Theft of Services – Kingsland Avenue – Response was made to the area in regards to a theft of services report.  The employee stated that a white Chrysler pulled into the station and requested $25 in gas.  After pumping the gas, the employee asked for the $25 to which the driver replied that they only wanted $10 worth.  The driver drove off heading north on Passaic Avenue.  Officers attempted to contacted the registered owner and were unsuccessful. 

Suspicious Incidents – 3 driveways located on Mapes Avenue – A caller stated that they observed an unknown male in their driveway.  The unknown male was standing near the driver’s side of their daughter’s car was seen looking into the driver’s side front window.  At the same time, the witness also observed a 2nd unknown actor enter a vehicle parked in the driveway of a neighboring home.  The second actor also walked North and entered an unknown vehicle and drove off.  The neighbor was contacted and stated that their vehicle had been entered and it was undetermined at this time if anything had been stolen. 

Nutley police are working with Clifton when they attempted to apprehend a suspect that fled from them along the Nutley border. It is believed the incidents are related and remain under investigation.

Motor Vehicle Stop – Park Avenue – A motor vehicle stop was initiated which resulted in the arrest of the passenger Jesus Cotto, 30, of Belleville, for an outstanding warrant out of Newark.  He was transported to Headquarters without incident, posted the appropriate bail, was advised to contact Newark Municipal Court for a new appearance date, and released.  Nothing further.
