On Tuesday, Dec. 3, Furniture Assist in Springfield will join millions around the world participating in a “global generosity movement” known as GivingTuesday, which was created in 2012 as a day that encourages people to do good. Over the past seven years, GivingTuesday has grown into a global movement that inspires hundreds of millions of people to give, collaborate, and celebrate generosity.
Furniture Assist, a nonprofit organization founded in 2006, is based on a simple concept. It accepts donations from those who have items to give, and then gives these items to people-in-need.
“The generosity of people is the very foundation of why Furniture Assist exists,” explains founder Dawson Yeomans. “At our Springfield warehouse, we receive donations of furniture, clothing, and household items from thousands of people each year, which enables us to give items to over 2,000 families-in-need each year.”
As an all-volunteer organization, Furniture Assist benefits not only from the generosity of donors, but the time and energy of over 100 volunteers each year. Volunteers make it possible to take-in, sort, and prepare donated items for clients, and to help clients select items to bring home. Volunteers are also responsible for fundraising, collections of needed items, managing the warehouse, and ad hoc projects.
Furniture Assist is pleased to recognize the generosity of donors, supporters and volunteers by participating this year in GivingTuesday — a movement which inspires people and organizations to transform their communities and their world through giving. GivingTuesday will kick off the generosity season this year by inspiring people to give back on December 3rd, and throughout the year.
“This will be our first year participating in GivingTuesday,” says Dawson, “and we hope it will be a good way to recognize that the generosity of donors and volunteers is what makes our work here possible.” In addition to the donation of household items, Furniture Assist depends on financial donations to pay rent and other operating costs, which are necessary to help FA’s clients.

Also, it gets 14.2 billion impressions on social media from people and organizations speaking up for the causes that matter to them, while encouraging others to get involved. People can demonstrate generosity in many ways on GivingTuesday. Whether it’s helping a neighbor or stranger out, speaking up about an issue or people you care about, or giving to causes important to you, every act of generosity counts.
