WESTFIELD, NJ — A three-sport athlete, the Westfield High School senior is committed to play football at Holy Cross this coming fall.

Declan McCauley, 18, said he is looking forward to playing at the Division 1 school where his brother, Jack, also plays football. McCauley is this week’s Ron Bansky and Associates Allstate Westfield Athlete of the Week. In addition to playing football and basketball, McCauley throws discus and shot put with the Westfield High School track team. Of course with the COVID-19 pandemic, the season didn’t play out as usual.

“I’ve been lifting a lot, keeping in touch with my college coaches and high school coaches — trying to stay in the best shape I can in these tough times,” McCauley said.

Early in the track season, McCauley said, he focused on practicing his throwing for track and field, but when he learned that spring sports would not return during the academic year, he switched his focus to workouts that would help keep him in shape for his first year playing college football.

“I flipped my focus because I know that I’m playing football in college,” McCauley said.

Holy Cross also sent instructions.

“They sent us a summer workout packet,” McCauley said. “So, I’m trying to follow that as best I can, and I’m doing that with my brother, which helps.”

Looking back on his high school career, the offensive lineman recalled a state championship football game in 2017 and a 2019 football game against Philipsburg as among the high points.

The Blue Devils netted a 20-14 comeback win on Oct. 25, 2019.

“We came back from 14 down, and we beat them in the last few seconds,” McCauley recalled.

Outside of sports, he said, his favorite subject is history. He intends to major in economics in college.

But his time at Westfield High School isn’t over quite yet.

McCauley said he is looking forward to an in-person graduation to be held July 8.

“I’m kind of excited to be with all of my classmates for the in-person graduation later in the summer,” he said.
