Q. Describe what your business does? 

A. An upscale haven that caters and understands the specific genetic styling and grooming needs of a man. The professional stylists and barbers at 18|8 give more than great men’s haircuts, they also give great advice on men’s style, trends, and grooming products.

We take pride in how well-educated our staff and stylists are when it comes to offering our clients advice, tips, and solutions for their hair care and grooming conundrums. We make sure that we give everyone who steps through our door the time, attention, and courtesy that they deserve. 18|8 is a salon that services man’s need to look his very best, so he can be his very best.  

Q. What is your job role for your business?

A. We manage over the business and provide support so that each member of our staff can provide the very best service and experience to our customers.

Q: Why did you decide to have a business or do business in Livingston?

A. American Dreams.  As foreigners from opposite sides of the world Daniela (from Brazil) and Gavin (Australia) have always admired Americans.  With their “take control of your future” capitalism spirit, of following your dreams and always looking for new opportunities, we also decided to join this approach to life and open an 18|8 Fine Men’s Salon.  We chose one of the most prestigious towns in New Jersey because we liked the entire 18|8 concept and we know that the Livingston and surrounding neighborhood would also appreciate what it could do for them.  

Our purpose is to make the male to look better and feel better in a really great environment.  We want to feel proud of what we can offer, further enable our clients to feel proud of what their city has to offer, and also leave a legacy to our children for the years ahead.  We really do believe the American dream is always possible.

Q. What is your favorite thing about Livingston?

A. We love the sense of a strong, safe and organized community from the residents, the people working at the Township and through to the large number of businesses operating in Livingston.  Everyone is willing to work together to make it a healthy, strong community where life can really be enjoyed.  There is also a clear appreciation of good quality products, service and professionalism which fits perfectly with what we can offer at 18|8.

Q. What made you go into this profession?

A. Gavin owns his own CFO advisory company, helping small businesses to succeed and Daniela is a real estate agent plus has the proud job of taking care of their two children Brian (7) and Luana (9).  Both of us have strong managerial skills from many years working in the finance and real estate industries.  We understand the importance of everyday continually working to be the best in your field.  We were both looking for a new challenge and to diversify from areas where we had worked for so many years.   

18|8 Fine Men’s Salons struck us immediately as a fresh, new concept with great management that also set and operated at the highest standards.  The hair and beauty industry is huge, dynamic, incredibly exciting and very satisfying to work in when you know you are providing the very best of professional services that will make a real difference to how people look and feel about themselves.  

Q. Did you go to school for what you do now?  If you could do it over, what would you have majored in in college?

A. Yes.  As believers in honest, hard work we have always found it important to invest in knowledge. Gavin is a CPA and has degrees in Banking and Finance and Marketing.  Daniela has a degree in International Business, a license in real estate and we constantly invest in online courses and seminars in the areas of management and motivation.  These studies have provided a good foundation from which we have also learned in the “real-world hands-on” manner.  Gavin only wishes he studied harder at foreign languages during his college days as so many opportunities and fun moments in life are missed because of communication difficulties.  

Q. What is your favorite part of the work day or week and why?

A. My favorite part of the day is morning time.  Every morning offers a fresh start, new challenges and experiences and I love that first cup of strong coffee in the morning.

Q. What are you most passionate about?

A. Freedom, family, food and helping people.  We love the saying of Zig Ziglar “you can get anything in life, if you help enough people to get what they want."

Q. In a few words describe your business plan.

A. Our business plan is “help our clients to look better, to feel better and consequently perform better."  If we are able to achieve this plan through good customer service and good professionals, we believe we will be successful and achieve everything.

Q. What advice would you give to someone starting out in business?

A. First, figure out where you are, where you want to be and how you will get there. Make sure you understand this and are comfortable with your goal.  Next make a realistic plan on how you can achieve your goal with the resources you will have available.  Be prepared to work really hard, encounter setbacks and learn a lot. Continually ask questions and speak with as many experienced professionals as possible.  And then stick to it until you realize your dream.

Q: How did your business get started?

A: Through a lot of research and professional help. We worked with one of the best franchise gurus, Rick Bisio.  Through his knowledge and guidance we were able to make a well researched and considered decision that we were totally comfortable with.

Q: What are some services that your business offers that people may not be aware of?

A: We are offering the safest pedicure spa available in the market right now.  Our pedicure station has a Shiatsu massage and is pipeless meaning that the water is not recirculated through pipes where bacteria could build up.  Other pedicure stations have this risk but ours does not.   

Q: What are some of your company’s successes or achievements that you are most proud of?

A: At this point, we are very proud to be able to get the interest of the best professionals in the industry. The professionals we hired all have more than 3 years of experience, receive additional training from the Corporate 18|8 stylist professionals and are just really fun people.  We also feel an element of pride for what we offer to our staff in terms of potential career opportunities, the professionalism of our management and operations of the business itself.

Q: What are some personal goals you have for your company?

A: My personal goal for the company is to have my employees achieve their full potential.  We want to be able to help them grow professionally (skills, experience, financially) as well as personally (developing through interactions with really dynamic, interesting and successful people).  Opportunities will be available in time for the offering of extra courses and mentoring to help staff grow in other ways.

Q: What sets your company apart from others in your industry?

A: What sets us apart is the way we approach our business.  We go above and beyond to provide a great experience to our clients. We want them to feel appreciated and to understand how they can really improve their appearance, making them feel good about themselves which can in turn impact performance and success.  

Q: Does your business have a symbol or logo?  What does it stand for?

A: 18|8     When combined, 18% chromium and 8% nickel “transformed” steel becomes a more enhanced and better performing stainless steel. The result is 18|8; our moniker for the transformation of our male clientele to feel better, look better and perform better.
