EAST BRUNSWICK, NJ—East Brunswick Public Library (2 Jean Walling Civic Center Drive) joins hundreds of schools, colleges, libraries across the state in celebrating the annual New Jersey Makers Day with a full slate of special programs from Monday, March 18 through Saturday, March 23.
New Jersey Makers Day is a statewide event that explores the world of maker spaces and DIY culture, as well as the importance of STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts and math) related activities. The goal of the event it to showcase technology and creativity resources in the community.
To celebrate New Jersey Makers Day, the library has over thirty different programs scheduled throughout the week. They range from a program explaining home landscape design with Rutgers Gardens director Bruce Crawford on Thursday, March 21 at 7:00 pm and a program on digital scrapbooking on Tuesday, March 19 at 6:30 pm.
Throughout the week, visitors can make origami butterflies as part of a giant art installation that will be showcased in the front of the library. Other programs include clothing alteration, cross stitching and computer controlling with Makey Makeys.
The week-long program series ends on Saturday, March 23 with a full day of children’s activities, including craft projects, an interactive drumming program with local musician Bonga, and even a special science program for children featuring Super Science.
New Jersey Makers Day is part of an initiative of East Brunswick Public Library to share STEAM resources to the community it serves. In late 2017, the library opened its EB Create makerspace which lets cardholders use several tech and creativity tools, ranging from sewing machines to a recording studio. Through their makerspace, the library also lets East Brunswick Public Library cardholders borrow specially curated equipment kits to work on projects from home.
Earlier this year, the library began providing access to cardholders to the online craft and art class service Creativebug.
All New Jersey Makers Day programs are free and open to the public, thanks to a generous sponsorship from the Friends of the East Brunswick Library. A complete schedule of New Jersey Makers Day programs at East Brunswick Public Library can be found online at www.ebpl.org/maker.
