Literacy Volunteers of Union County is expanding its Free GED Test Prep Program through a new state "Literacy4Jersey" grant designed to provide community based adult literacy training opportunities for unemployed and/or underemployed New Jersey residents.

15 week GED Test Prep courses will be held in Roselle and Cranford, beginning on March 4 and in Rahway beginning on April 8.

"We are thrilled to have received $66,000 from the Department of Labor and Workforce Development so that we can serve many more adults who are looking to improve their lives by taking and passing the GED high school equivalency test," said Elizabeth Gloeggler, executive director.

Launched by Literacy Volunteers of Union County in 2009, in response to the growing need in the community for more flexible, student-centered programming for students with the greatest educational and financial need, LV-UC's free GED Test Prep classes are offered four to six hours a week, for ten to fifteen weeks, at a variety of locations and times throughout Union County.  Upcoming classes will be held in both Cranford and Roselle beginning on March 4.  Call for registration information.

"We have been tremendously successful in enrolling, tutoring, and preparing our adult students to take the GED high school equivalency exam," said Dawn Harrison, basic skills specialist and coordinator of the GED program. "Our unique one-on-one and small group student-centered approach to teaching provides adult students who have significant educational and financial challenges with the needed support and flexibility of scheduling to effectively prepare for the test.  Our wonderful highly trained volunteer tutors make this tremendously valuable program possible!"
