NFSB’s response to COVID-19 is a community wide effort resulting from vital partnerships with businesses, civic organizations, religious groups, local businesses, and individuals. We are all working together during this crisis. There has been no time in the recent past wherein NFSB’s credo of neighbors helping neighbors has been so tested or held so true. The Board of Trustees, staff, volunteers, clients, and Food Pantry patrons are most appreciative of all the generosity during this crisis, which enables NFSB to continue operations in a way that is most responsive to local needs.

NFSB is a not-for-profit organization with three agency components: The (Psychotherapy) Center, The (Food) Pantry, and The (Thrift) Shop. They function independently from each other, but are related. The impact of COVID-19 has a compounding negative effect across agency operations: The (Psychotherapy) Center, which generates revenue through insurance fees, has experienced a flux in sessions as clients transition to the new Tele-Health platform. The (Food) Panty is experiencing extremely low reserves at a time when need has escalated. The (Thrift) Shop, a crucial revenue stream has been closed for the duration of the crisis. The volunteer force, which is the functional back bone of NFSB has been drastically reduced, with only a skeleton crew to carry out only the most vital Food Pantry and School Meal efforts. THE MOST DIRECT WAY TO HELP NFSB IN THIS TIME OF CRISIS IS VIA FINANCIAL SUPPORT. NFSB is committed to ensuring the safety of staff, volunteers, psychotherapy clients, food pantry patrons, and all those who interact with NFSB, by complying with state and local public health directives. Our protocols are evolving as the COVID-19 crisis evolves. Currently we are instituting the following measures according to Nutley Health Department’s best practices: social distancing, hand-washing and glove wearing, requiring those who are feeling ill or who are ill not enter premises.  Thank you for helping us to keep our community safe.

Due to COVID 19 related closure, the Nutley School System has been approved by the New Jersey Department of Agriculture to operate temporarily under the Seamless Summer Option (SSO). The Seamless Summer Option is a federal meal program that allows School Food Authorities (SFAs) already participating in the National School Lunch Program (NSLP) and School Breakfast Program (SBP) to provide meals during periods longer than 10 days of closure.

Grab and go meals for all resident school children, regardless of eligibility for free/reduced lunch, are available.  Open air distribution of meals from food service provider Pomptonian will take place at the side of the Nutley Family Service Bureau (NFSB) Annex located at 169 Chestnut Street. In addition, when possible, NFSB will be offering fresh produce, dairy items, and proteins made possible by the generosity of our many community partners. Please view further info at school website.

The stress, isolation, anger and sadness which may be brought about by the pandemic crisis is real, but the intervention to address these challenges requires personal space engagement that goes against state health policy. NFSB is following recommended guidelines from the CDC and state and local health officials to offer tele-health psychotherapy sessions. For more information about NFSB tele-health view
