PATERSON, NJ - Valicia Simon had over 10 years of experience working in payroll and administration when tragedy struck. Valicia’s father had passed away and her mother too was sick.
Valicia had a career, but was forced to leave it in order to care for her ailing mother, now a widow. As time passed, Valicia decided that it was time for her to re-enter the workforce and move forward with her goals.
She decided to take a computer class at the Greater Paterson OIC in order to update her Microsoft Office skills. The hope was that by gaining these skills and already having great work experience, Valicia would be able to obtain quality employment.
Unfortunately, when Valicia began applying for jobs, she was unable to get so much as an interview.
“I believed that a factor for me not getting an interview was my age,” said Valicia.
One-Stop career counselor Vezire Sela worked with Valicia and didn’t cease until she was able to find successful employment. “I told her it is all about timing. With your skills you will be hired before you know it.”
Before long, Valicia was hired by the Passaic County Freeholders as a secretary where she is currently thriving.
