We are welcoming patrons back into the library—for specific purposes and limited amounts of time. There are some rules to ensure that everyone stays safe and healthy.  Patrons may use the computers and copier, browse for books, or have something notarized. Only a limited number of people are allowed in the building, so we recommend making an appointment.  Appointments go from 10:30am-5pm Monday-Friday and 9:30am-4pm on Saturdays. If there is space, you may be allowed as a walk-in.  Everyone must wear a mask over their nose and mouth and maintain social distancing guidelines.  There are wipes and gloves available as well. We want you to use the library, but we want you to be safe, too.  To schedule an appointment please call 908-754-7885 ext. 3.

Curbside pickup is still continuing even though we are open in a limited capacity.  If you are a South Plainfield resident with a South Plainfield library card, you can go on to the online catalog and request your books, DVDs, and other materials.  Only items from South Plainfield Public Library can be requested; the delivery system between libraries is currently suspended.  If you are an out-of-town resident, you can still request materials from the library; you would have to send your request to spcurbsidepickup@gmail.com (for adults) or spkidscurbsidepickup@gmail.com (for children/teens) and include your full name and library card number/address and phone number.  There are also Google forms to fill out to request books if you don’t have specific titles in mind.  All the information is on our website (southplainfield.lib.nj.us/curbside.htm), and there are also written and video tutorials to help guide you in this process.  All items can be picked up Monday through Friday 10:15 AM to 6 PM and Saturday 9:15 AM to 5 PM, and staff will contact you when your items are ready to be picked up.  Any items you are returning must be put through the outdoor book and DVD return slots.  Please be aware that all returns are quarantined before they are checked in. This means that items you have put in the book drop may still appear on your account for a few days.  Don’t worry, we are not charging any fines during this time.

At home, please take advantage of all the online offerings from our library. Everything is free as long as you have your library card. Elibrarynj has been a popular source of ebooks and audiobooks for many years, but we also have many other services that you can access from home. These all can be accessed through the library homepage.  Hoopla is one of the first you should explore.  Whether you connect online or through the app, you will find movies, music, audiobooks, ebooks and comics for every taste and age group.  You can borrow up to five titles each month--without hold lists.  Many people can have the same title checked out at the same time.  You will need to create an account with an email address and password, but then you’re ready to go!

Our newsletter delivers the local news that you can trust.

If you want to watch some great movies and TV, try our new streaming services. Acorn TV offers the best of British television. Mystery lovers will enjoy Midsomer Murders, Vera, Poirot, Murdoch Mysteries and many more.  They also have comedies, dramas and documentaries, and new shows are added every week.  To start watching, follow the links from our home page to the RB Digital landing page. Once there you will need to create an RB Digital account.  The same account that gives you access to Acorn TV, will also allow access to IndieFlix (classic movies and TV), Method Test Prep and Qello (music and concert videos).  If you have used Qello, you can use the same RB Digital account. All of these are available (for free) on your computer, smart TV or any internet-enabled device.

If you miss coming to the library to read our variety of magazines, you can keep up to date on line.  Sign in to RB Digital with your library card to browse the electronic collection of magazines. There’s over 70 titles, so there should be something for everyone.

Are you looking to learn a foreign language? Rosetta Stone is an award-winning interactive approach to learning languages.  After you create a free account using the barcode on your library card as a patron ID, you will be able to choose one of over two dozen languages offered. Daily practice is the best way to learn a new language.  For those of you who have been coming to our numerous ESL classes, Rosetta Stone is very helpful for people who are just learning English as well. After selecting English (American) as the language they wish to learn, there will be vocabulary and sentence practice, and you can even hear pronunciation if you’re using a computer that has a microphone.

For September, we are slowing down on some of our virtual programming through Zoom.  Please go to our website at southplainfield.lib.nj.us for registration instructions.  It will let you know when you go to register if the class is full.  All programs are listed on the website as well, so always check there for a comprehensive list.  Please note that for the month of September, storytime for ages 2 to 4 will only be on Tuesday mornings at 10:30 AM.  Storytime for ages 4 and up will continue each week on Wednesdays at 6:30 PM, and Babytime for under age 2 will continue each week on Fridays at 10:15 AM.  Chinese Bilingual Storytime is presented on Zoom in both Mandarin and English on Monday at 10:30 AM; you do not need to know Mandarin in order to enjoy this storytime.  Korean Storytime is on Zoom on Tuesdays at 11:30 AM.  Chinese Language Bookclub for children in first grade and up meets on Zoom on Tuesday at 1:30 PM; you must know some Mandarin for this program.  Spanish Storytime with Ms. Jailene can be found on our YouTube channel.  Weekly storytime crafts can still be picked up in person or via our curbside program, and we still have some Take and Make crafts for September.  Starting September 8, you can pick up a Felt Quilt craft, which will need to be returned to us by September 30 so we can make and display our library quilt!

On Monday evenings at 8pm, we are continuing with our ESL classes that we had in the library when we were open.  If you are interested in attending, please email epasternak@southplainfield.lib.nj.us and Ms. Eve will send you a link to join the class.

If you are looking for information on the coronavirus COVID-19, go to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) website www.cdc.gov.  On its home page, you can click for information specifically on the coronavirus.  It provides information on how to protect yourself, what to do if you are sick, and the symptoms you should look for.  For state information on the coronavirus, you can go to www.nj.gov/health/cd/topics/ncov.shtml, which shares a lot of the same information as the CDC.  There’s also another webpage, https://covid19.nj.gov/, that gives you access to live updates about the state and gives more specific information on testing sites, about job and housing concerns.  For general COVID-19 questions, call 2-1-1; for medical COVID-19 questions, call 1-800-962-1253 (24/7).  You can also text NJCOVID to 898-211 to receive alerts.   For more local information, you can go to the Middlesex County website www.middlesexcountynj.gov.  The Borough of South Plainfield Facebook page also posts updates about the town, county, and state.

We want everyone to stay safe and healthy and we hope to see everyone soon!
