Time for the latest news from South Plainfield Library:
First, the Library will be closed on Tuesday (Nov. 8th) in observance of Election Day, and on Friday (Nov. 11th) in observance of Veteran’s Day.
The first children’s-related item is next week’s Monday Night Movie. It’ll be shown at 6:30PM. It’s being presented free (including the popcorn); no pre-registration is required. Please call for title and content information. We can say that it’s the latest installment of the animated series that presents a somewhat unusual account of prehistoric Earth. If you miss the Monday showing, it’ll be repeated on Wednesday afternoon at 12:15 (though much of the target audience will probably still be in school).
Due to the Tuesday and Friday closings, we’ll have an abbreviated schedule of children’s programs next week. “Storytime”, for children age 3 & over, will be held on Wednesday evening at 6:30 and Thursday afternoon at 1:15. “Toddler Time”, for children age 2 & 3, will be held on Wednesday and Thursday mornings at 10:30. The “LEGO Builders Club”, for children age 7-12, will meet on Thursday afternoon at 3:30. And the “Saturday Storytime” program for all ages will be held on Saturday morning at 11:00. Each of these programs last about an hour and are presented free; no pre-registration is required. The story programs feature stories, songs and a craft activity for older kids.
In addition to the regular programs, we’re also having a fall Kidcraft program on Thursday evening at 6:30. The kids will be making items out of pipe cleaners and pony beads. It’s for children age 7-12, and is being presented free. Pre-registration is requested at the Children’s Desk.
We’ve also got a program for young people next week. The “LEGO Science League”, for young people age 13-18, will meet on Monday afternoon at 3:00. Participants will be designing and building simple machines with LEGO pieces. No pre-registration is needed. For details on any of our programs for children or young people, please call and ask for Miss Mija or Miss Audrey.
We have some adult programming coming up next week, as well. We’ll have two historical/cultural programs on this Saturday and next Saturday, respectively. This Saturday (Nov. 5th), Angus Gillespie, professor of American Studies at Rutgers, will talk about the many legendary accounts of the Jersey Devil. And next Saturday (Nov. 12th), historian/lecturer Judith Krall-Russo will talk about apples, the products made from them, and their place in New Jersey history. Both of these programs start at 1:00. They’re being presented free; pre-registration is required.
We’re continuing to offer “Job Search Skills Coaching”, conducted by Professional Service Group of New Brunswick, on Monday afternoons from 1:00-4:00. These one-on-one sessions are free, but are by appointment only. Please call ahead to schedule an appointment.
The next meeting of the “Mystery Book Club” will be held on Wednesday afternoon at 4:00. Attendees will be discussing Death at La Fenice by Donna Leon. No pre-registration is required.
We have space for a couple of advisories. First, our private study rooms are in high demand, and we need to know which particular ones are available at which particular times. So, if you’ve reserved one and can’t be here, please call ahead to cancel the reservation. Also, if you’re finished using a room, please be sure to stop by the Circulation Desk to let us know that the room is now available. (Alternatively, if you just need to leave the room for a couple of moments and will be back, let us know that, as well.)
Second, if you’ve gotten an item off the shelves but won’t be borrowing it, please don’t try to put it back. It can be very easy to put it in the wrong place, especially if you’re not familiar with our system of shelving. Just leave the item on one of the tables, or on one of the carts labelled for such items. We’ll take care of replacing them.
That’s all for now. For more details, check our website at www.southplainfield.lib.nj.us or our Facebook page at www.facebook.com/southplainfieldlibrary. You can also just call us at (908) 754-7885. See you later.
