Come join us at the library for Monday Night Movies! On July 17 at 6:30 PM, we will be showing a new release starring Charlie Hunnam and Robert Pattinson. Hunnam plays Col. Percival Fawcett, a real-life explorer who discovered evidence of a previously unknown and advanced civilization in the Amazon in the 1920s. This movie tells the story of his disappearance in 1925 as he searched for this mysterious city. If you cannot make it to our Monday night showing, it will also be shown on Wednesday, July 19 at 12:30 PM. The movie is rated PG-13.
Are your children bored yet this summer? Well, you are in luck because there are plenty of fun activities at the library for children of all ages! There are storytimes for 2’s & 3’s Wednesdays and Thursdays at 10:30 AM, storytimes for 3 and older Tuesdays at 10:30 AM and Thursdays at 1:15 PM, and Babytimes for babies up to 2 years old on Fridays at 10:15 AM and 11:15 AM. There is also a Family Storytime on Saturdays at 11 AM that is designed for children of all ages. Some of our other weekly programs include a Summer Science League on Mondays at 3 PM for children 10 and older (registration required) and the Kid’s Corner Book Club Monday nights at 6:30 PM for children 8 to 10 years old. Every Tuesday there is a Puzzles and Games program at 11:30 AM for children 3 and older (right after storytime!) and Chess Club at 12:30 PM for ages 6 and up (Beginner to Advanced chess players are welcome!), and on Thursdays there is a Lego Builder’s Club at 3 PM. It’s a lot of information, but don’t worry- all the program schedules are available on our website. You can always give the Children’s Department a call as well at 908 754 7885 ext 4.
In addition to the weekly children’s programs, there are also some special programs happening this week. On Monday, July 17 at 10:30 AM, there is a Special Needs Sensory Storytime. This special storytime is intended for preschool to young adult aged individuals with special needs. Ms. Mija presents the storytime in a way to make participants more comfortable than they would be at one of the regular storytimes.
On Wednesday, July 19 at 6:30 PM, bring your children (up to age 7) to Sing Along with Mr. Kurt at the South Plainfield Public Library! In lieu of an admission charge, please bring in a new, unopened non-perishable food item or personal care product for each person attending. These donated items will go to the South Plainfield Food Pantry. No registration is required for this fun-filled event.
On Thursday, July 20 at 6:30 PM, there will be a special kidcraft for children 4 and up. Registration is required, and there is a $1 materials fee. Children will be creating ocean-themed sand art.
On Friday, July 21 at 2 PM, children are invited to join us for a drive-in movie! Bring a cardboard box that your child can fit in, and materials will be provided for them to decorate it like a car. Then, a movie will be shown for them to enjoy in their new cardboard car. Registration is not required.
Finally, the library will be hosting an SAT Verbal Information Session for teens taking the SAT and their parents on Monday, July 17 and Thursday, July 20 at 4:30 PM. This program will help teens and their parents prepare for taking the Verbal section of the SAT. Registration is required.
Library hours are Monday, Wednesday, Thursday 10 AM-9 PM, Tuesday and Friday 10 AM-6 PM, and Saturday 9 AM-5 PM. We are currently closed Sundays for the summer.
