ECLIPSE UPDATE: On August 21 there will be an eclipse of the sun. It will be partially visible in South Plainfield from 1:22 pm until 4:01 pm. NEVER look at the sun directly. For instructions on safe methods of view, click here ; more information can be found here.
You know summer is drawing to a close when books checked out won't be due until after school starts. There are still a few copies of the high school summer reading books on the shelves, and still time for a few more great activities before September.
Have you noticed any wonderfully painted rocks while you've been walking around South Plainfield lately? They are Kindness Rocks – rocks that have been painted, often with an inspirational saying, and left outside to brighten someone's day. Drop by the library on Friday, August 25 between 10:30 and 3:30 to paint your own and spread some cheer.
The kids' summer reading program is nearly over—Saturday, August 19 is the last day to check in. Children who have read 100 books can come next week to pick up prizes they have earned.
Check-in for the adult reading program continues all month. Members can register the books they've read, entitling them to raffle tickets. The drawing will be in the first week of September.
We are showing movies every week. This Monday night you'll see a comedy starring three men whose average age is 82. They decide to take on the bank that absconded with their pensions. You'll get a large dividend of laughter. There will be a second showing on Wednesday, August 23 at 12:30.
There will be a special movie for teens on Monday, August 21 at 3:30. It is based on a popular young adult novel telling the story of a girl who is allergic to everything; a new friend helps her break out of her bubble. It will make you laugh, cry, and everything in between.
Join us for an evening of family fun on Wednesday, August 23 at 6:30 for Pajama Bingo. Jump in your jammies and play a few games of Bingo. (Yes, there will be prizes!) All are welcome and there is no registration.
The Friends of the Library are planning a Book and Bake sale for September 23-30. We are accepting donations of gently-used books, CDs, and DVDs. Books should be clean and not stained or torn. Discs should not be scratched and preferably have the original packaging. If you would like to donate more than a bag or two, please call ahead to make sure we will have room. You can also sign up to bring in baked goods.
The Friends are indeed good friends of the library. In addition to running book sales, they have regular raffles – and they are responsible for those delicious chocolate bars everyone loves. They raise money for the benefit of the library and its patrons. Did you know that the museum pass program is a project of the Friends of the Library?
If you have not yet taken advantage of the museum passes, summer is an excellent time to do it. The program includes a combination of passes, tickets and discounts. You can borrow a pass to visit the Battleship New Jersey in Camden (admits up to 2 adults and 3 children) or the Grounds for Sculpture in Hamilton (admits up to 4 people). Call or come into the library to reserve the passes.
You can buy deeply discounted tickets for the Museum of Natural History in New York City and the Adventure Aquarium in Camden. We have discount codes for Diggerland and Sahara Sam's Oasis indoor water park (West Berlin, NJ). The Friends have also made arrangements with the Liberty Science Center (Jersey City) to give an automatic discount to anyone who presents a South Plainfield library card.
Make the library part of your fun in the last few weeks of summer!
