Come join us at the library for Monday Night Movies!  On March 5 at 6:30 PM, we will be showing a new movie about Winston Churchill (Gary Oldman) and the decisions he had to make when he was first appointed Prime Minister during World War II.  If you cannot make it to our Monday night showing, it will also be shown on Wednesday, March 7 at 12:30 PM.  The movie is rated PG-13.

On Saturday, March 3 at 10 AM, please join us for our annual Read Across America celebration in honor of Dr. Seuss’s birthday.  There will be stories, songs, some very special guests, and of course, birthday cake!  This birthday celebration will be taking place at the South Plainfield Public Library.  Registration is not required.   

On Sunday, March 4 at 3 PM, Ms. Mija will be having Special Needs Sensory Storytime. It is intended for preschool to young adult aged individuals with special needs.  This special storytime will be presented in a way that will make it more comfortable for participants than they would be at one of the standard storytimes.

Join Ms. Jackie for the Easy Reader Book Club on Tuesday, March 6 at 3:30 PM.  This book club is for newly minted readers ages 6-8.  Ms. Jackie will be reading two easy reader titles by Jan Thomas with them: What is Chasing Duck? and There’s a Pest in the Garden!  She will also be having a Kid’s Corner Book Club for ages 8-10 on Thursday, March 8 at 6:30 PM.  They will be reading Fantastic Mr. Fox by Roald Dahl.  Copies of the books for all the book clubs are available at the adult reference desk.

On Friday, March 9 at 3 PM, there will be Maker’s Day Activities for ages 7 and up.  One of the activities will be to make spinning tops out of CDs, bottle caps, and marbles.  There will also be a “Lego Build,” where children will be asked to create specific designs given to them.  Finally, children will get to build paper helicopters to study aerodynamics.  All materials will be provided.  If you would like any further information, call the Children’s Department at (908) 754-7885 ext 4 to speak to Ms. Stella or Ms. Jackie.

We are also having a Chinese New Year Celebration on Saturday, March 10 from 1:30 PM to 4 PM at the South Plainfield Senior Center (90 Maple Ave).  Join us as we welcome in the Lunar New Year with a celebration of Chinese culture.  The event will kick off with a lion dance performance, and demonstrations of different Chinese arts will continue throughout the day.  Performances, such as singing and dancing, will occur from 1:30 PM to 3 PM.  From 3 PM to 4 PM, there will be different demonstrations, such as calligraphy, fan painting, paper cutting, woodblock printing, kid’s arts and crafts, and candy around the world.  This program is made possible by Buddha’s Light International Association of New Jersey, New Jersey Buddhist Culture Center, South Plainfield Cultural Arts Commission, and the South Plainfield Public Library.

In addition to all of our special programs, don’t forget to stop by for some of our regular children’s programming!  There are storytimes for 2’s & 3’s Wednesday and Thursday at 10:30 AM, storytimes for 3 and older Tuesday at 10:30 AM, Wednesday at 6:30 PM, and Thursday at 1:15 PM, and Babytimes for children under 2 Friday at 10:15 AM and 11:15 AM.  Lego Builder’s Club meets on Mondays and Thursdays at 3 PM.  Ms. Mija has added another Puzzles and Games to the children’s calendar; on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 11:30 AM, right after the storytimes, bring your children to enjoy some play time.  Meditation and Mindfulness with Ms. Aimee meets on Wednesday at 7:45 PM; it is for children 7-12 years old. 

Pizza & Pages: Young Adult Book Club will be meeting on Thursday, March 15 at 3:30 PM to discuss Wonder and Auggie & Me by R.J. Palacio while enjoying some pizza.  You can choose to read one or both of the selections.  Copies are available at the adult reference desk.  This book club is intended for 7th graders and up, but books can be chosen that are appropriate for 5th and 6th graders as well.  If you have any questions, please call us at (908) 754-7885 ext 4 to speak to Ms. Audrey.
