The South Plainfield High School Wrestling Team had a successful weekend as they competed at the NJSIAA State Wrestling Tournament in Atlantic City, New Jersey. The Tigers sent down three wrestlers to the tournament and placed two of them in the top 8 of their weight class to earn All-State honors. Tommy Renna placed 7th, while junior captain Anthony White earned a 4th place finish in a very tough 132lb bracket.
Anthony White finished his junior campaign with a 41-2 record. He won the Morris Knolls, Greater Middlesex Conference, and District tournament for the third time in his career. Anthony was also undefeated at the Virginia Duals for the 3rd time in his career. At the Region V Tournament at Franklin High School, Anthony won his 2nd straight title in dominating fashion. At the state tournament, Anthony had a breakthrough performance to finish as the 4th best 132lber in New Jersey. Anthony dominated his way to an opening round win over Isaiah Fenton of Howell 12-2. Anthony would face Josh Gervey of High Point in the next round and win 10-5 advancing him to the quarterfinals for the 2nd year in a row. Anthony defeated talented freshman Simon Ruiz, from Delbarton in come from behind fashion to win 5-3 in sudden victory advancing him to the semi-finals for the first time in his career. Anthony would suffer a setback in the semi-finals dropping him into the consolation bracket where he faced Josh Gervey of High Point again and controlled the match defeating him 3-0. In his third-place match, Anthony would face a familiar opponent in Simon Ruiz of Delbarton and lost a close 1-1 match in the Ultimate Tiebreaker to finish his tournament in fourth place. South Plainfield will look to Anthony next season to help the Tiger wrestlers stay on top.
