Suburban Woman’s Club President Jane Rundella announced that two South Plainfield High School seniors each have been awarded a $1,000 scholarship by the Club. They are Julianne Ferraro and Upashna Purohit. A third $1,000 scholarship was awarded by the Hudson Family to Faith Cantamessa in memory of Marvin Hudson.
Julianne Ferraro will attend Rowan University where she will study toward a career as an occupational therapist. She is a member of both the National Honor Society and Spanish National Honor Society. As a three-season athlete, Julianne attended the Seton Hall Women in Sports Day Ceremony as the South Plainfield High School National Athletic Honoree. She was active in multiple clubs and extracurricular activities and volunteers with the Special Olympics Team and Vacation Bible School.
Upashna Purohit enrolled at Rutgers University and will study toward a degree in management information systems. She is a member of the National Honor Society and multiple clubs and student activities, including sports. As president of the Environmental Science Club, Purohit aided her advisor in securing three school grants: one for $5,000 for five water bottle stations; one for $10,000 for a new greenhouse (a learning center for science classes); and a $3,000 grant for a diverse outdoor garden. She volunteers as a Clean-Up Leader for the biannual town clean-up and volunteers as a tutor.
Faith Cantamessa, while pursuing a career as a veterinarian, attended a pre-veterinary course at Centenary University. She is a National Honor Society student, a member of the school band and orchestra, co-captain of the girls’ tennis team, and participates in a number of other clubs and extracurricular activities. Cantamessa volunteers with the Special Olympics and the town clean-up committee. She was also awarded for having a poem published.
Suburban Woman’s Club hopes to hold meetings again once the state allows it. Over its sixty-eight-year history, this club has focused on improving the lives of the area’s women and children and continues to dedicate much of its fundraising in support of organizations which provide help to these two groups. It is a great club and, if you are interested in joining, here is how you can become a member.
Any woman of South Plainfield or the surrounding area is very welcome to become a member. Membership dues are $35 per year and meetings are held the first Thursday of the month at 1:00 p.m. at the American Legion Hall, Oak Tree Avenue, South Plainfield. To learn more, please contact Membership Chair Jean Tietjen at 908-668-0125 or email to email@example.com. Like the club on Facebook!
The Suburban Woman’s Club of South Plainfield is a member of the New Jersey State Federation of Women’s Clubs of GFWC.
